Ford Focus named Connect Car of the Year 2012 by Connected World Magazine
With each new model year, cars become more advanced and more connected to the outside world. Cars today can connect users to Facebook, Twitter, Email, and Text Messages all through their smart phone and infotainment center.
This year the Ford Focus was named Connected Car of the Year 2012 by Connected World magazine. The editors of the magazine based their awards on three broad factors: safety, convenience, and information options.
Safety includes everything from active safety features to help provide extra assurances to drivers, to distraction-free driving.
To help judge convenience, judges looked at overall comfort of the system and driver convenience. Criteria included remote access to the vehicle, vehicle diagnostic information, traffic and navigation features, as well as driver assistance programs.
The third and final category was judged on providing information options in a distraction-free manner. Features include streaming content, device-pairing capaibilites, social media connections, and Web connectivity.
“The Ford Focus sets a high bar in the small category when it comes to connectivity with MyFord Touch®and SYNC®,” said Peggy Smedley, editorial director, Connected World magazine. “They just keep getting better and better. No other car in its class comes close to offering such a high level of safety, convenience and infotainment. Techies and non-techies alike are enjoying this connected ride.”

Ford Makes SYNC System Standard on 2013 Fusion and Flex
Ford SYNC was a major game changer in domestic cars. Sure other infotainment systems were coming to the market as well, but they were confined to expensive luxury models, but some how Ford found a way to make a system that was just as good, and in many cases better, than the luxury models.
Ford announced late last week that they would now be making the SYNC system standard on all models of the 2013 Ford Fusion and Flex.
The Fusion is one of the hottest selling mid-size sedans on the market right now. It offers plenty of interior space, a gorgeous looking cabin, and good fuel economy on nearly every model. As of late the Fusion has become Ford’s baby, they are doing everything they can to keep the allure of the Fusion as popular as they can, and it seems to be working.
The Flex is a more little known model in the Ford line up. But while its not as popular as the Ford Explorer there is still good reason to make SYNC standard on its models. Because of the Flex’s buyer demographic, there are very few Flex models sold without SYNC in them any way. Ford is working under the assumption that by removing one of the many options will make it easier to build and option which in turn makes it easier to buy.
The Ford Flex and the Fusion have are beginning to emerge as major players in their markets. The Flex has been incredibly popular in the 7-seat crossover market, but has unfortunately not been able to match the success of the Fusion. Right now the only thing holding the Flex back is the trend in the automotive industry to steer away from large SUV/Crossovers and go with smaller more fuel efficient models. By making SYNC, an already popular feature, standard on both the models for the next model year, Ford is hoping to boost sales even more by bringing their cars one step closer to identical features and options lists of German luxury brands.
How Your Car Can Help Manage Your Health
We have all heard that walking to and from places as often as possible is great for improving your overall health. But now Ford is showing how being in your car can help monitor your health as well. Will it make you fit in to those skinny jeans? Probably not, but it can help monitor what is going on behind the scenes with your health.
Ford Goes Green…Literally
The Ford Escape has always been one of the “greener” cars in the Ford line up. From the old Escape Hybrid to the new Escape with EcoBoost engines, the Escape is one of the greenest cars in the Ford line up. Now Ford is taking it one more step further by using actual plants inside the door bolsters.
Ford’s overall mission is to make their vehicles more sustainable and the next step in that is making the material used in the door, known as the bolster, in part from kenaf.
Kenaf is a tropical plant that has a similar look and feel to bamboo and is related to cotton. The plant replaces oil-based materials that are currently used in Escape’s doors.
By using kenaf, Ford estimates they will offset 300,000 pounds of oil-based resin per year in North America. Ford also says, that because of the significant weight reduction (25% weight drop in the door bolsters), the Escape will also save on fuel.
“Kenaf and the other renewable materials in the Escape have made the vehicle more environmentally friendly and fuel efficient,” said Laura Sinclair, materials engineer for Escape.
Materials that are recycled, renewable, and that reduce impact on the environment include soy foam in the seats and head restraints; plastic bottles and other post-consumer and post-industrial materials in the carpeting; climate control gaskets made from recycled tires; and more than 10 pounds of scrap cotton from the making of denim jeans.
Wide use of more environmentally friendly, recycled and recyclable materials complements the projected best-in-class fuel economy of the all-new Ford Escape, further boosting the vehicle’s environmentally responsible credentials. The new Escape meets the USCAR Vehicle Recycling Partnership goal that 85 percent of the vehicle is recyclable.

2013 Ford Fusion to Get Ford’s New Lane Keeping Assist
The Ford Fusion is quickly becoming one of the most popular models in the company’s line up. Therefore it is to be expected that Ford will try to put all of the latest and best technology into the next Fusion to keep buyer interest and customer satisfaction high.
Ford is now confirming that the 2013 Ford Fusion will be equipped with their newest technology called Lane Keeping Assist. This system helps to keep cars from veering out of lanes and detect drowsy drivers. Lane Keeping assist combines a camera mounted behind the rear-view mirror, as well as a computer that can control the electronic power steering.
Using the camera, the system will monitor video feeds to detect solid and dotted lines and determine if the car is between them or not. If the car drifts out of a lane or make a lane change without using the turn signal, the system will notify the driver with a tone and flashing light.
This technology is also set to determine if a driver is drowsy. Using the same camera if a driver slowly drifts into another lane, the system will sound an alarm and vibrate the steering wheel. If the driver does not respond to the the alerts the car will then be able to nudge the vehicle back into the lane. Should this behavior continue the car will flash a cup of coffee on the information screen and suggest the driver take a break.
Systems like this have previously only been available in luxury models like BMW and Mercedes, but with the constant advancement domestic brands are beginning to adopt the technology and are finding ways to put it into their cars at a cost effective rate. These technologies are in no way meant to replace safe and alert driving but are put in place as an added safety measure to keep everyone on the road safe.
Ford also says the technology will be available on the Ford Explorer.
